GPS models from TomTom, Garmin and Mio, Veronica's call on Android/T-Mobile's G1, help speeding up BitTorrent. Vista/OS X File sharing help. Our favorite mouse is cheap, too. Three core processor info. Cheap HDMI/HDCP ready video card options.
Texting while driving is more dangerous than driving drunk or stoned! Patrick's new favorite government study ever comes from the UK: Texting while driving is more dangerous than drunk-driving.
The first phone featuring Google's Open Source Android OS, T-Mobile's G1 is on the way... Veronica's tre' interested, we'll be getting one in for review. In the mean time, check out Sascha Segan's G1 review over at PCMag.com
Adrian needs a quiet, cheap mouse to keep from waking folks up when he's gaming in the wee hours of the morning... Roger and Patrick are huge fans of Microsoft's basic Intellimouse Optical. It regularly sells for under $20, and as little as $15 on sale.
This week's Freebie Download Pick: 3d Traceroute. Just pop in an URL or IP address and 3d Traceroute will output the packet stats as color 3D graph with adjustable x and y axis for easy viewing... and it's got a ton of other useful network testing tools built in!
BitTorrent is super slow for Shawn... we suspect the major problem is his ISP, then go through our top tips for speeding up BitTorrent!
Think your ISP might be throttling your BitTorrent downloads? Try searching BroadBandReports.com to see if other folks are having similar problems.
David's having problems with OS X Leopard/Vista file sharing...

David's looking to learn more about his 3 core AMD Phenom X3 processor and what it might do well. Think anything that works well with multiple cores... it's one core better than a dual core and one core slower than a quad core... they're essentially AMD quad core processors with one bad core, and they have solid performance... just watch the price, since you can sometimes get a full quad core processor for just a little bit more cash.
Kenny's looking to add a new video card with an HDMI output and HDCP support ot his Dell Inspiron 531s... pretty much any new video card with an HDMI output should do the trick... our main concern is whether or not you'll need a half height card to fit in that slimline case. To keep things on the cheap (since you don't seem to need 3D Gaming oomph) check out Sub-$100 Graphics Cards: Radeon HD 4670 and GeForce 9600 GSO Reviewed over at Extemetech.com.

No, but most cops are trained in driving on closed courses, by professional drivers. You too can take the courses, and they are very useful.
Not only are cops nearly always exempt from these kinds of laws, but the US Congress always writes laws with a section that excludes Congress and staff. Things like workman's comp, form a union, fair wages, are all not applicable to the folks who write the laws.

I know that the war should not be shown for security and other reasons, but if it was I bet the military would get all the money it wants and the nfl and ohter leagues would die.

Oh, I know that, but thought I'd drop it in anyway.
As for the rest of your post about budget and such, yeah, that's the sign of the times we live in. People think nothing of top dollar being spent to get the star sports players, but get bitchy when ever money is spent on the guys risking their lives every day to keep us safe. As with most things in life, we get what we pay for...and many times, what we deserve.

Hey, I wasn't trying to make a point to you, but the other poster who mentioned other info.
BTW, based on a discussion I had with a training officer in my state, CA seems to be rather skimpy on auto training.
Many believe that cops are somehow better then we are. I have also seen police officers violate basic firearms rules because they aren't given enough training with their sidearm and many think there gun is just a tool rather then a lifesaver. (or life taker) The same goes for officers and cars.
Six months of training on multiple subjects is not enough, but the budget gods think it is. I think everyone is a loser then.

While I get your point, I would also say that 20 hours of lecture and 16 hours of hands-on driver training is probably about 18 hours of lecture and 14 hours of hands-on training more than the average driver gets before they get out on the road.

Taken from the CHP web site: "Emergency Vehicle Operations Course
Emergency Vehicle Operations CourseThe Emergency Vehicle Operations Course is famous throughout the world as the finest law enforcement driver training program available. You will be trained in enforcement driving at the Emergency Vehicle Operations Course. You will receive a minimum of 20 hours of lecture on vehicle dynamics, performance driving techniques, and departmental policy. You will also receive a minimum of 16 hours of hands-on driver training. This training includes vehicle placement, skid control techniques, performance driving, defensive driving and Code-3 pursuit driving.
Each cadet will be required to meet minimum performance objectives during each phase of hands-on training, as well as showing knowledge by successfully completing a written examination."
So much for the MONTHS of training you claim.

Personally I think most agencies should require far more automobile and firearms training but since budget people and not life long cops run those departments certain things get cut or reduced.
A number of years back, one of the associate editors of Car and Driver, who was a reserve officer in Texas, wrote about how they had a serious number of officer deaths due to officer related driving in the county he worked and lived in. Something like 33%-50% of the officers who died on duty in the time period he wrote about died because they failed to properly control their patrol car.

In Texas, you have to be a licensed peace officer and are regularly tested to keep your license. Some times I wonder though with some of the small town cops I have seen. My paternal grandfather was a police officer and he had time times more class than most of the people wearing badges on the street today. Texas DPS officers as well as the Texas Rangers are very professional and have been that way long before Walker texas ranger was a tv show.

maybe it has something to do with the months of training involved at police academy's that the average citizen does not have (much of which is specialized driving training). And certainly something a 17yr old that just got their license and has to send and receive a text every 25 seconds. If you think you can just walk in to a police station and say "I want a job" and they will hand you a car and a gun then you really need to inform yourself before making comments like that.
